Location:
Communications/Music Complex, Room 204G

Dr. Loneka Battiste, Assistant Professor University of Tennessee Knoxville, presents a lecture as part of the the 11th Annual Music Education Lecture Series. The mission of the Music Education Lecture Series has been to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of Loyola University students, faculty, the university community, and music teachers in the Greater New Orleans community at large by bringing distinguished individuals in the music education profession to campus for presentations on specialized subjects. In recent years, the series has grown to bring music education scholars in residence.

Dr. Battiste has frequently presented papers at national conferences and symposia on social justice and culturally responsive teaching in music education. At Loyola University, she will discuss teaching methods that are responsive to how different culturally specific knowledge bases impact learning. She will deliberate the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning. Battiste will provide practical examples of transferring theory into practice in music education and illustrate culturally responsive pedagogy within the classroom.

Event is free and open to the public.
