Songs in Therapy

This continuing education workshop will review various ways songs are used in music therapy. Through a combination of didactic presentations and experiential exercises, participants will learn how to select song interventions in assessment, treatment, and evaluation in several clinical populations.

    Lecture and brief experience of various song methods to be used in assessment and to address the clinical goals of reminiscence, personal and group expression,to stimulate speech,to establish bonds with others, and to representthe therapeutic relationship.
  • 11:00 to 11:50
    Lecture and brief experience of various song methods to be used in supporting spirituality,to reduce anxiety,to support coping and achieve insight and to express feelings to others.
  • 11:50 to 12:00 Break
  • 12:00 to 12:50
    Song variations and examples of song forms to achieve emotional expression
  • 12:50 to 1:00 Course evaluation

Cheryl Dileo

Cheryl Dileo, Phd., MTBC, is the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Music Therapy, Coordinator of the PhD program, and director of the Arts and Quality of Life Research Center at Temple University. She is the past president of the National Association for Music Therapy (USA) and World Federation of Music Therapy. She is the author/editor of 15 books and more than 100 articles and chapters of Music Therapy.

Learning Objectives

2. Participants will identify song interventions for the following clinical goals: To Support Spirituality/Transcendence To Calm/Reduce Anxiety/Address Trauma To Support Coping To Achieve Personal Insight To Express/Communicate Feelings to Others

3. Participants will identify three song variations

Continuing Education Credit
