Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Poulenc’s opera dramatically brings to life the true story of the Martyrs of Compiègne, a group of Carmelite nuns. During the final dark days of the Reign of Terror their monastery is seized, their priests are condemned, and the women themselves face the guillotine rather than abandon their devotion to God’s work.
