Loyola’s Uptown Threauxdown, as the evening is known, is in its eighth year at Tipitina’s and features all 11 of the school’s contemporary ensembles, said Kate Duncan, Director of the School of Music and Theatre Professions and the Conrad N. Hilton Chair in Music Industry.
“The night is a celebration of all the hard work the students put in – a celebration of the coursework,” Duncan said. “And it’s a nice way for the parents to see what their kids have been doing all semester.”
The event allowed the students to fully engage and show themselves in a way they don’t during normal class times, Duncan said. The show lasted from 7 p.m. until midnight, and the students performed both original music and covers, arranged for a band.
The local band Galactic, which includes several Loyola alums, purchased Tipitina’s in 2018. Duncan said the venue has been a wonderful partner to Loyola, and the talent buyer, Nick Logan, a graduate of Loyola’s School of Music Industry, works closely with Loyola students.
In addition to the Uptown Threauxdown, students in the music school have benefitted from the internship program and mentorship opportunities afforded by Tipitina’s, which takes three to four students per year under its wing.
