Instructor, Guitar and Music Industry Studies

John Rankin is an accomplished guitarist and instructor, and has been a faculty member of Loyola’s College of Music since 1985. During his career, he has also taught guitar at every other university in New Orleans, including Tulane University, Xavier University, and the University of New Orleans.

Performing has always been a passion for John; a constant presence in the New Orleans music scene, he has performed in almost every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival since 1981 and every French Quarter Fest since 1999. For years, John has been a fixture on Tuesday nights at the world-famous Columns Hotel, and has released five original recordings.

New Orleans Magazine named John as a Jazz All-Star in 2007, and in 2011 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in Music Education by Offbeat Magazine. In 1992 and 2003, he won the Big Easy Award for best folk music, and was also a winner in the 1985 American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival.
