THEODORE MICHELS

Extraordinary Professor, Music Industry Technology

Theodore "Teddy" Michels is a sound artist, programmer, technologist, and educator. His primary research interests lie at the intersection of art, music, and technology.

Raised in Brunswick, a small town in southeast Georgia, Teddy joined the full-time FAMIS staff in 2015 as Assistant Professor of Internet Technologies. He received his BFA and MFA in Sound Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). During his thesis studies, he focused his efforts on making complex topics in programming more accessible to artists and musicians and wrote A Practical Guide to Interactive Installation Art, an instructional text which describes the creation of audiovisual experiences using high-level programming languages.

Teddy has worked on a wide range of projects for a number of innovative New Orleans-based startups. As Technology Specialist & Sound Designer at BLK RBBT, he designed and implemented a number of original, interactive installations, and executed sound design, music editing, and programming for a wide range of clients, including Corvette, the nonprofit organization Sweet Home New Orleans, and the BUKU Music and Art Project.

His interactive software and installations have been on display at a wide variety of events, from fundraisers for Project Lazarus during Halloween New Orleans, to the Essence Music Festival, as well as concert venues for Pretty Lights and New Orleans-based Tank and the Bangas. Teddy also managed web based logistics for the 2015 Mobile Aerofest as Systems Manager at Like Butter Productions.

Teddy is also a contributing designer and programmer for the sound design collective, Moon Echo Audio, and specializes in the creation and distribution of original sound synthesis engines and interfaces.

Most recently, Teddy founded Loyola University’s Creative Coding Club, in an effort to provide a collaborative environment for expressive code for both students and faculty.
