About Bertis Downs
Bertis Downs IV is an entertainment attorney, manager, and education activist best known as legal counsel and manager of the superstar rock band R.E.M. Downs graduated cum laude from Davidson College in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, then graduated from the University of Georgia Law School in Athens, GA. A former law clerk for Senior Judge Wilson Cowen of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit of Washington, D.C., Downs is a past chair of the Music and Personal Appearance Division of the American Bar Association Forum Committee on the Entertainment and Sports Industries.
Bertis is active in many civic and political organizations, serving on the boards of People For the American Way, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. He lives in Athens, GA with his wife, Katherine, and their daughter, Addie, where he currently serves as an adjunct professor in the UGA Law School, where he teaches courses in entertainment law and music law.
